504Alfred Kerr Freehold Mt Mitchell residence Mt Mitchell
Either this Alfred or his son Alfred

Alfred Kerr was born on the 18th June 1845 in the area known as West Maitland, where the town of Maitland now stands.
He and his older brother Alexander were christened by the Reverend Mr McIntrye, the Presbyterian Minister of Maitland.

The family had returned to Sydney when Alfred was orphaned at the age of 12.

His father Robert is believed to have died in 1853; his mother Ellen, after remarrying a local publican, died at the age of 46, in July 1858, at 2 Gloucester Street, The Rocks. She was 46.

At the time Alfred's siblings Robert, Isabella and Margaret were all over 21; James Smart was 19, John Blackwell 17, Alexander 14, and Janet Smail 10.
Alfred , Alexander and Janet Smail were then taken in by their uncle James Smail and his wife Jessie.

James was the publican of the Robbie Burns Hotel in the Rocks when he died on 15th March 1860, two years after Ellen passed away.  His widow Jessie moved to Grafton after his death to be with her oldest daughter Janet, who had settled there after marrying Grafton local William Scott Cowan in 1853.

Alfred, by then 14, along with his younger sister Janet Smail, also relocated to Grafton with Jessie. Their older brothers James Smart and John Blackwell also left Sydney for Grafton.

      Obituary
It is with feelings of regret that we chronicle the death of a very old and highly respected resildent in the person of Mr Alfred Kerr, which sad event occurred at his residence, Glen Innes, on Tuesday. For a long time he had been in an indifferent state of health, and for the last three months was practically confined to his bed. During that period he suffered dropsy, but on Sunday he developed pneumonia, which was primarily the cause of his demise. The deceased gentleman was a native of Maitland, and came to this district at the age of 21 years. He had passed the alloted span of three score years and ten by two years. Mr Kerr is survived by a grown-up family of sons and daughters, for whom much sympathy is felt in their sorrowful bereavement. They are - Messrs Robert (Glen Innes), Walter, James, Alfred (Mt Mitchell), Alex (Glencoe), Mesdames Morley (NZ), Morley (Guyra), Morley (Glencoe), Morely (Mt Slow), Mrs Wetherspoon (Mt Slow), Mrs Tibbs (Mt MItchell), Fraser and Willbatt (Glen Innes). The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, and was largely attended, clearly showing the high esteem in which deceased was held. His remains were interred in the Presbyterian portion of the local cemetery, the REv Cameron officiating at the graveside. Mr Tutt conducted the obsequies. [5]
