Mrs Mary Anastasia Shanahan
There passed away in the Armidale Hospital on 31st December 1973, Mrs Mary Anastasia Shanahan of Gostwych Street, Uralla. Mrs Shanahan was 86 years old.
The late Mrs Shanahan was the eldest daughter of the late John and Mary Smith of May Farm, Gundy Toad, Scone.
In 1909, she married Patrick John Shanahan of Harlow Park, Uralla. The couple lived the greater part of their life on the property, before it was sold.
After a brief period in Armidale, they returned to Uralla. Here they retired and it was in Uralla that Mr Shanahan predeceased his wife by 11 years.
Mrs Shanahan was also predeceased by her son-in-law Mr N W Bourke, of Argentine, Newcastle.
There were two children of the marriage, Frank of Wauchope and Vera, Mrs Bourke of Argentine.
Fourteen grandchildren and twenty-eight great grandchildren survive Mrs Shanahan.
She is also survived by six sisters. They are: Mrs E Tuckey, of Gundy road, Scone, Mrs M Batterham, Tawmworth, Mrs G Jones, Scone, Mrs W Iliffe, Manilla, Mrs D Noonan, Scone and Mrs I Miller, May Farm, Scone.
The late Mrs Shanahan enjoyed the respect and lvoe of a side circle of friends and relatives. The large attendance at her funeral and the floral tributes bore testimony to her popularity.
Rev Father McKeon, of Uralla, officiated at the Requiem mass, which was concelebrated at the Catholic Church Uralla. Father McKeon also officiated at the graveside in the Armidale Cemetery, where Mrs Shanahan was laid to rest beside her husband.
Pall bearers were six sons, Brian, Nick, Jim, Pat, Don and John Bourke. Another grandson, Bill Bourke followed closely, carrying the family personal weaths. [8]
