THE SYDNEY MORNING HERALD Monday 17th July, 1848
      Shipping Intelligence Arrivals

July 16. EQUESTRIAN, Barque, 801 tons. Captain Spence, from London 24th February and Plymouth 17th March. Passengers: Dr Adams, Surgeon Superintendent, Mr and Mrs Griffiths, 5 sons, 1 daughter and 2 servants; Mr and Mrs Webb, 4 sons and 2 daughters; Miss Walters and 277 Immigrants.

The Equestrian. This vessel, although one of the fastest ships that ever entered this harbour has had a tedious journey of 122 days from Plymouth. Shortly after leaving that port she met with very adverse winds which detained her eight days in the Bay of Biscay and in crossing the Equator she was becalmed for a similar span of time. She entered Bass’ Straight on 1st inst. and for six days experienced nothing but heavy gales there from N to NW. In rounding the Howe the same bad weather continued but the wind then blew from SSE. At midnight on 8th Inst. during the heavy gale in which the schooner Wanderer was unfortunately lost, she passed Heads and was driven towards the North as far as Port Stephens. Capt. Spence states that during the number of years he has been at sea he has never before experienced such a terrific gale as he did that night and that it blew with such violence that he was compelled to run the vessel under bare poles. Also that it was exceedingly fortunate that he had a good offing from the land otherwise nothing would have saved the ship from going on shore, the gale being from SSE.

She had on board 277 Immigrants of whom 96 are married couples, 48 single men, 49 single women, 72 children between 1 and 14 years of age and 12 infants. 6 births and 7 deaths occurred on the passage but of the latter only one was an adult. The immigrants consist of English, Irish and Scotch but most of the former are principally from the Midland Counties. All appear in excellent health and we should say they are the most servicable people that have yet been sent to the Colony. Great credit is due to the Captain, Surgeon and Officers of the ship for the cleanly and wholsesome state in which she had been kept. Her cargo consist of her stores for the Commissariat Department.
