Mary Selina Thompson
Mary came from a lare family and was born at the Bulldog Diggings near Ewingar. It was a goldmining area and attracted many people in the early days. When she was a child her parents moved in onve of her uncle’s bullock drays from teh Bulldog Diggings to Tenterfield, where her father had found employment. She remembered the trip quite well. It had been raining all day and they were saturated. Her mother sat up the front of the old dray and all the children were in the back. They stopped at Drake and a kindly old cross eyed lady took them in and gave them dry clothes and put the children to bed while their other clothes dried.
On arriving at Tenterfield they found their new home that their father had built. Masry remembered the house had a big fireplace and steps up the side that were white washed, and the kitchen had a window. There was a sofa where their father used to rest and sing to his children, and a big cupboard was out the back.
Another exciting time was when the first train came into Tenterfield. All the school children wore the same kind of blue dress for the occasio. This was a highlight of her school years.
At 18 Mary was a housemaid at Drake and in ecember of 1989 she married Joseph William Henry Thompson at St Peter’s, Drake. Joseph was a miner from Hillgrove and 29 years of age.
Mary and Joseph had a large family of 13 children most of whom were born at Hillgrove. Two of their sons served in WWII Jack returned but George was killed when a prisoner-of-war. He was in an accident from a tunnel cave-in on the Johore causeway from Singapore. He had been on the Burma railway F Force.
On here 101st birthday, Mary had 21 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
