    • Sad Drowning Fatality
Mrs Tobin of Aberfoil, the victim
On Tuesday last it was discovered that Mrs Mary A Tobin, an old and respected resident of Rockvale, wife of Mr Wm Tobin, who had been an inmate of Kiola Hospital for some time, was missing from the Caledonian Hotel, where she had been the guest of Mrs J Bayley for the Xmas holidays. Mrs Tobin had been about during the morning, and seemed in her usual health, but on Mrs Bayley missing her, inquiries were made at relatives’ places in East and West Armidale, where it was thought she might have gone. Nothing having been heard the police were informed. It was ascertained that the wanderer had been seen going towards her home, walking along the Rockvale road, the last being heard of her was some four miles out. Search parties were organised, and la large number of Armidale residents scoured the bush near where the lost one was last seen during the whole of Tuesday night, but without success, and the general opinion was that she must have either fallen down and perished in the bush or fallen in the creek, which was much swollen by the rain. The night was cold and wet, and as Mrs Tobin had nothing but her ordinary clothes on when last seen all ope of finding her alive vanished on Wednesday morning. the searchers, however, persisted in their work, and at last found her had near the creek and eventually recovered the unfortunate wanderer’s body at the edge of the stream some distance further down.
The remains were brought to the hospital morgue at Armidale in the afternoon.
      The Inquest
The Coroner (Mr Purkiss) held an inquiry yesterday morning at the Court House, when the following facts were elicited:
Sergt Pye deposed that on the 27th, about 4pm, he received work of deceased being missing from Mrs Bayley’s, and subsequently made inquiries and searched along the Rockvale road and the search was continued throughout the night. About 11 next morning, in company with others, he saw a woman’s black hat on the bank of Tilbuster Creek, about 1 1/2 miles below the bridge. The had had caught on some blackberry vines, and was partly covered by sand. The hat produced was identified as belonging to Mrs Tobin. The party divided, one half searching up the creek and one down stream. Afterwards saw the body at the morgue. Wtness saw no marks of violence, and it appeared as if deceased had been drowned.
J H Mockton, car driver, deposed that on Tuesday 27th he was on the Rockvale road, about 12:15. About 2 1/4 miles out he passed a woman walking towards Rockvale, about 15 years from the road. She was walking steadily and appeared to be weak. She had on a black and white hat. When returning about a quarter to 2 he did not see anything of the woman. It was about a mile from Tilbuster Creek he he saw her.
