  • Notes
    • Nola Mackey’s book states birth 8 March, 1854. p. 117. Descendants of Robin And Mercy Bell.
James Thomas Bell was born at Sparkes Creek, via Scone on 8 March 1854 and came with his parents James and Rachel Bell, (nee Dawson), brother Reuben and sister Mercy to a small selection of 72 acres on the Saumarez Creek on 29 une 1859. Foundations of the original house, and a few Iris lillies were in evidence until a few years ago, also a large waterhole in the Saumarez Creek known as Bell’s Hole by families in the district. This selection was taken over by James’s father-in-law, Thomas Dawson and became part of the property known as Mt Pleasant. James and Rachel Bell oved to their new property in the late 1860’s/ This was of 320 acres and known as Blagdon. It is still in the hands of James’s great-granddaughter and her husband, Geoff and Florence Thorpe. The foundations and part of one wall of the property still stand today.
James Thomas and Reuben Bell selected land at Black Mountain in 1873 which later became known as Old Belmont and Mereworth.
James Thomas Bell married jane Margaret McGuire (born at Tom’s Gully, via Armidale on 19 December 1856, the daughter of William and Isabella McGuire (nee Aitkens), at St Peter’s Church of England, Armidale on 5 April 1974. They had five sons and two daughters. jane Bell died tragically at the ae of 30 years on 9 April 1887, the eldest child James Henry Bell was only 12 years old. james Bell’s father-in-law, William McGuire helped care for the family iwth the help of Sarah Hutton, the sister-in-law of Jane Hutton (nee Bell), James’s sister. William McGuire died 18 months later and james Bell married Sarah Hutton (born Mordue , via Guyra on 1 march 1861), at the house of James Hutton on 24 December 1889 and three sons were born of the marriage,
James Thomas Bell, better known as Dar was a very successful farmer and with the help of his oldest sons had a very prosperous farm. An article in the Alury Banner and Wodonga Express, of 4 November 1898, states that his farm would do credit to any part of the colony. Old Belmont had 700 fruit trees of apples, pears, plums, nectrines, quince and peaches, and had 50 acres of cultivation of wheat, rye, oats and potatoes; 12 acres of artificial grasses; 6 acres of red clover; 650 sheep, crossbred and Romeny Marsh, 80 head of dairy cattle (Ayrshire and Alderney). His horse team of Clydesdale, and a bullock team did most of the ploughing and farm work, and he also had a beautiful pair of buggy ponies. His machinery consisted of a Bender Mowing Machine, chaff-cutter, 6HP steam engine, a horse hoe and a double and single furrow poiughs. He had a total of 1400 acres. The dairy supplied mik to the Black Mountain Butter Factory.
James Thomas Bell was a lay preacher of the new England Baptis Church and until the church was built, he and several other members held cottage services, as it was too far to travel back to the Bedford Baptist Church at Saumarez Ponds, where James and Rebecca were deacons.
Old Belmont, except 200 acres and the main homestead, are still owned by James Thomas Bell’s grandsons Vince and Ross Bell.
Sarah Bell died on 26 March 1929 aged 68 years and james Thomas Bell lived at Old Belmont before moving to Armidale with his son Leslie about 1937. James Thomas Bell died on 5 February 1941 aged 86 years. Both are buried at Black Mountain. [7]
