The Monaro Mercury Monday January 19th 1920
Death of an old Monaro Resident.
An old Monaro resident, Mr. James Tracey, died at the residence of his son-in-law Mr. T.H. Thomas, of Numeralla, on Thursday evening, at the ripe old age of 86 years. The deceased was born at Kilmore, county Tipperary, Ireland in September 1833. and arrived with his parents in New South Wales when only seven years of age. He lived at Tom Groggin for many years, and carried on sheep and cattle raising, later taking up his residence at Numeralla where he remained up till the time of his death, enjoying excellent health until a few months since, when he began to fail. He had led an active life and was in full possession of his faculties up to the period of his decease. He followed mining for a while, when the diggings broke out at Fiery Creek, some 20 years since. One of his early reminiscences was a service at the Old Roman Catholic Church Cooma at which he was confirmed by Archbishop Podling the first R.C. Archbishop of Sydney. Another aspirant for confirmation was Mr. John Mylan who died at Numeralla in December 1918, and who had reached the age of 84 (father of Mr. Thomas Mylan, of that centre) and who was an old friend of the deceased. The late Mr. Tracey was of a quiet retiring disposition, but took an active interest in politics, though not seeking the limelight.
His wife predeceased him two years since, and he leaves four sons. Thomas, James, Matthew and John; and four daughters Mesdames Tate (of Goulburn) Sheehan (of Sydney) E Thomas (of Numeralla) and Miss Mary Tracey (of Sydney) Miss Ellen Tracey of Cooma is a niece and Mr. Woodward a Nephew of the deceased.
The burial took place at the Mittagang Cemetery, Cooma on Saturday last, the service being conducted by the Very Re. Dean Norris. P. P. The undertaking was carried out by Mr. C Willis.
