Obituary
A tribute to Bonnie Carroll
Bonnie Jean Lorranie Carroll (nee Bambury) was born on August 9, 1927 in Warwick. She was the youngest in a family of 11 children. Her parents were Elizabeth and Duncan Bamberry.
Bonnie started school at East Warwick when she was five years old and finished school there when her brother got the cuts with bamboo sticks for something he didn’t do. After this altercation all the children were transferred to Cantral WArwick school anad it wast here that Bonnie completed her education at the age of 14. All the children walked two miles to and from school each day.
Bonnie commenced an apprenticeship in tailoring with Theo Canto in Warwick and became a tailoress, earning 10 shilling a week ($1:00 in today’s currency). She moved to Bert Angus employment and remained there until the age of 19.
Bonnie left Warwick to live with her sister, Florence, at Amosfield after breaking her arm. Later she moved to Tenterfield and took up a position at the Royal Hotel as a maid. This is where Bonnie met and married Edgar Noel “Dick” Carroll and they resided at Tenterfield. They had seven children - Peter Richard, Barry John, Wayne Duncan, Charmaine Jean, Sheree Ann, Noel Edgar and Jamie Earl, all of who are living. Bonnie and Dick raised all their children in Tenterfield.
As the children grew up Bonnie worked at the Riverstone Meat Works with great colleagues for 9 years. During World War II which encompassed her teenage years, Bonnie made khaki cotton handkerchiefs for soldiers in the middle east where her brother Noel was stationed in the AIF.
Bonnie told how her father would put a penny in her hand??????favourite meak was a saveloy which was 3 pence each.
On Bonnie’s 77th birthday her comment about her birthday card from Charmaine was ‘why did you put 21+ GST on the card?
Bonnie Carroll is survived by her seven children, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
You can shed tears that she has gone. Or you can smile because she loved. Fly like a bird.
